margin-right: 4%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><h2 id=\"unique-identifierLetterPres2018_2\" data-lineheight=\"24\" data-fontsize=\"16\">Letter from the President<\/h2>\n<h4>Dear Colleagues,<\/h4>\n<h4>I want to start my tenure as President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/david-alegre.com\/repo-sed\">SED<\/a> by thanking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.econ.umn.edu\/~tkehoe\/\">Tim Kehoe <\/a>for doing an amazing job over the last three years.\u00a0 He oversaw the organization of two very successful meetings in <a href=\"https:\/\/david-alegre.com\/repo-sed\/sedam_2017\/\">Edinburgh<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/david-alegre.com\/repo-sed\/sedam_2018\/\">Mexico<\/a>, and next year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janeeckhout.com\/\">meeting in St. Louis<\/a>, which also promises to be a great event.\u00a0 During <a href=\"http:\/\/www.econ.umn.edu\/~tkehoe\/\">Tim<\/a>&#8216;s time as President, we have seen the visibility of the Society grow along with the number of submissions for the summer meeting.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.econ.umn.edu\/~tkehoe\/\">Tim<\/a> has also expanded the presence of <a href=\"https:\/\/david-alegre.com\/repo-sed\">SED<\/a> at the winter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/conference\/\">ASSA meetings<\/a> by adding a third session.\u00a0 Of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.econ.umn.edu\/~tkehoe\/\">Tim<\/a> and I both have the great fortune to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marina-azzimonti.com\/\">Marina Azzimonti<\/a> as Secretary and <a href=\"http:\/\/bus.wisc.edu\/faculty\/erwan-quintin\">Erwan Quintin <\/a>as Treasurer.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marina-azzimonti.com\/\">Marina<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bus.wisc.edu\/faculty\/erwan-quintin\">Erwan<\/a> will continue in their roles during my three years as President and should take the credit for any successes.<\/h4>\n<h4>For those of you attending the<a href=\"https:\/\/david-alegre.com\/repo-sed\/sedam_2018\/\"> 29th Meeting of the SED<\/a> in Mexico City at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itam.mx\/\"> Insituto Tecnologico Autonomo<\/a> de Mexico this past June, you already know that it was a resounding success.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/f\/pla492.html\">David Lagakos<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.upenn.edu\/~ordonez\/\">Guillermo Ordo\u00f1ez<\/a> co-chaired the program committee while <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/e\/pdo120.html\">Diego Dom\u00ednguez<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/facultad.itam.mx\/legacy\/facultad\/profesoresDetalles.php?id_profesor=73\">Germ\u00e1n Rojas<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/e\/pur2.html\">Carlos Urrutia<\/a> literally ran around nonstop making sure all of the local arrangements appeared seamless.\u00a0 The plenary speeches given by <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/f\/pal266.html\">Joseph Altonji<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/e\/pme30.html\">Enrique Mendoza<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/f\/pst365.html\">Nancy Stokey<\/a> are now <a href=\"https:\/\/david-alegre.com\/repo-sed\/2018_plenary_videos\/\">up online<\/a> for anyone who might have missed them.\u00a0 I want to especially thank <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/e\/pme30.html\">Enrique Mendoza <\/a>who did double duty by giving one of the<a href=\"https:\/\/david-alegre.com\/repo-sed\/2018_plenary_videos\/\"> SED plenary talks<\/a> and by participating in a pre-SED conference sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.banxico.org.mx\/\">Banco de Mexico<\/a> and organized by <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/e\/pdo120.html\">Diego Dom\u00ednguez<\/a> and Jessica Roldan.\u00a0 Events such as these help us to finance other activities like the spectacular gala dinner in the historic part of the city and the taquiza party and artisanal mezcal tasting. Add in a mariachi band and it is a fitting goodbye party marking the end of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.econ.umn.edu\/~tkehoe\/\">Tim<\/a>&#8216;s presidency.<\/h4>\n<h4>Next year we will be in St Louis for our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janeeckhout.com\/\">30th meeting<\/a>, which will take place on the <a href=\"https:\/\/economics.wustl.edu\/\">Washington University in St. Louis<\/a> campus June 27-29, with a pre-conference event and reception at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis on June 26. These events will be sponsored jointly by <a href=\"https:\/\/economics.wustl.edu\/\">Washington University in St. Louis<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlouisfed.org\/\">Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis<\/a>.\u00a0 The local organizing team is headed by <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/e\/pga130.html\">Carlos Garriga<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/f\/pma1243.html\">Rody Manuelli<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/e\/pra33.html\">B Ravikumar<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/e\/pwa65.html\">Chris Waller<\/a>, a group that has much combined experience arranging events of the size and caliber of the <a href=\"https:\/\/david-alegre.com\/repo-sed\">SED<\/a>. Look for announcements on our <a href=\"https:\/\/david-alegre.com\/repo-sed\/sedam_2019\/\">website <\/a>and make sure to submit papers by February 15, 2019.\u00a0 I am pleased that <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/e\/pri80.html\">Marla Ripoll<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/tepper\/faculty-and-research\/faculty-by-area\/profiles\/yeltekin-sevin.html\">Sevin Yeltekin<\/a> have agreed to serve as Co-Chairs of the Program Committee and equally pleased to announce that they have recruited <a href=\"https:\/\/www0.gsb.columbia.edu\/faculty\/lveldkamp\/\">Laura Veldkamp<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/farhi\/home\">Emmanuel Farhi<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janeeckhout.com\/\">Jan Eeckhout <\/a>as next year&#8217;s plenary speakers.<\/h4>\n<h4>In other news, I am very happy to announce that the 31st meeting will be held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uab.cat\/en\/\">Universitat Autonoma<\/a> in Barcelona. The dates for the meeting are scheduled to be June 21 to 23. The last day coincides with the celebration in honor of San Joan, a day that is very special in the city of Barcelona. This will be our second time there.\u00a0 The last time was <a href=\"https:\/\/david-alegre.com\/repo-sed\/sed1995_program\/\">1995<\/a> when <a href=\"http:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/e\/ppr10.html\">Ed Prescott<\/a> was President and<a href=\"http:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/f\/pma763.html\"> Ramon Marimon<\/a> (also a past president) was program chair. I am also working on other exciting venues for the 2021 and 2022 meetings.
